During sunset tonight or sunrise tomorrow, depending on your location, the Earth will be aligned to witness a very rare event - the transit of Venus across the surface of the Sun. This event has been recorded only 6 times in human history and will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of us as it will not happen again until 2117. The transit of Venus is also of historical significance when it was used by astronomers over 250 years ago to make the first reliable measurement of the distance between the Sun and Earth. The shadow cast by Venus on its journey through our solar system, will even be visible to the naked eye with the correct pair of shades (for more information click here), as it occupies 1 arc minute in the sky, whereas the diameter of the Sun is around 32 arc minutes. Check your local area and closest observatories for potential events and for the best view of the transit of Venus.
